Last time I was 18 years old and it was for a seatbelt ticket (he claimed I passed in a no passing zone, but because I was young and had a POS car, he realized that I didn’t have a lot of money, and the ticket would kill my wallet with insurance premiums so he wrote it as a seatbelt violation instead)

My bike has been street legal less than a year. Riding home yesterday I get stopped by the county sheriff, I learned 2 laws that I did not know existed

1) License plates must be mounted horizontal (mine is vertical, I do this so that when I ride dirt and crash the plate doesn’t get ripped off)

2) Standing on the foot pegs while riding is illegal in Michigan.

Yes that is right, and google confirmed it, it is illegal for your butt to leave the seat of your bike.

257.658 Riding on seat of bicycle, motorcycle, moped, or electric personal assistive mobility device; number of persons; wearing of crash helmet; conditions; rules; requirements for autocycle.

Sec. 658.

(1) A person propelling a bicycle or operating a motorcycle or moped shall not ride other than upon and astride a permanent and regular seat attached to that vehicle.

Your feet are requried to be able to reach the pegs, but if you press down on them hard enough to make your butt lift off the seat, you’re breaking the law. The reason for this, rumor is, is because standing up is considered stunt riding.

I’ve been riding dirt bikes for about 20 years, you ALWAYS ride standing up so that your legs work as suspension and you don’t get bucked over the handlebars if you hit a log, rock, or in street case massive michigan pothole, truck tire. It’s safer to stand than sit for me. Since my bike is a supermoto my seat is also very narrow, made for racing, therefore not comfortable to sit on for long periods of time.

Final outcome, told me to fix the plate and have a nice day.

Writing my representative to know that the butt leaving your seat law is BS.

As for vertical license plates, Minnesota gets it.

Wow on no standing while riding. Been a Michigan resident all my life and never heard that. How hard was it to get that bad boy road legal? That looks like alot of fun and i don’t think our roads will ever get fixed so that something like that will be necessary in a few years.

Yeah it never crossed my mind since I try to stand while riding as much as possible. If you put only your toes on the foot pegs it’s a good calf workout too.

For MI you need DOT tires (I have another set of dirt tires and wheels that have aggressive tread but are street legal)
Brake light
Tail light
Headlight with hi/lo operation
Horn
1 mirror mounted on the left side
Turn signals are not required since you can use your hands to signal

I rode my cbr to work today and had to stand for some of the bumps! This is completely necessary in Detroit.

This could be the result of NOT standing up over a typical michigan pothole

I like to stand on the pegs to stretch from time to time, or when going over rough terrain (read: Michigan roads) as well, so thanks for the heads up. That said, I’m sure I’ve been seen by officers before while doing it, so I suspect the additional warning was tacked on top of the plate one.

I’m also surprised about the plate, considering about 20% of all bikes I see have vertical mounted plates.

Lol

Just the bumps on 75 between every slab of pavement feel like they want to throw me off. I miss Florida, where supersport suspension is useful

Hmmm...pretty sure we were told (in the safety course in MA) that if there was an obstacle that you could not avoid to blip the throttle to shift weight off the front, lift your butt off to use your legs as added suspension and thud, done.

That law is bullshit.

Never even knew about the plate thing. Here in Fl virtually every bike does it. Wonder if same rules apply

I’ve heard florida is the worst for bikes, meaning the have the most laws for bikes compared to other states

State police, but that was a whole nother deal. Had to call multiple police stations and SOS just to find out who does the inspection. And it’s only from 8am-4pm mon-fri

I feel that I’d have a hard time not standing, but I’m not sure. I usually only stand when I’m riding like a jackass (i.e. fast, over bumps, through the woods, etc.), and I sit when I’m just puttering around. I’d think I would stand up without thinking about it, but at the same time, I’d be on the public roads so I wouldn’t really be doing that would require a stand. Realistically, I’d probably sit until a pothole than stand up without thinking right before I hit it. Though probably only on a dirtbike and not a sportbike or cruiser. I’ll have to ask my friend what he does on the road with his dual sport.

From my one or two bike riders in the car group, they say its awful. Ironic considering our car laws are so vague.

I do know we still have an Under 21 license plate for the bikes

It was also a hot day, about 85 degrees in slow moving traffic. That seat gets pretty warm after a while and you need some airflow between the legs
